Research Methods

Aim :

To enable students to :

- Become knowledgeable of the research process and be able to begin to understand how to critically yhik why different research approaches are used in the service industry

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students will be able to :

- Apply arrange of quantitative and / or qualitative research techniques to business and management problems / issues
- Understand an apply research approaches, techniques and strategies in the appropriate manner for managerial decision making
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of data analysis and interpretation in relation to the research process
- Conceptualise the research process
- Develop necessary critical thinking skills in order to evaluate different research approaches utilised in the service industries

Content:

- The role of research in service industries and in other contexts
- Methodological considerations and research design the research process
- Setting research aim(s) and objectives
- Identification of research approaches and evaluating research strategies
- Critically reviewing literature and secondary data
- Critical thinking skills, and how these relate to research
- Research Ethics
- Types of data : quantitative and qualitative
- Selecting samples and exploring research techniques
- Collecting primary data through observation, interviews and questionnaires

Teaching and learning Strategies:

- Total Learner Hours: 200 hours
- Contact Hours: 48 consisting of lectures, workshops, and computer based on workshops, tutorial contact for research project supervision
- Private and Directed study: 152 hours
