Prepare and complete an intellectualy demanding individual research project which :
• Covers with some degree of originality significant issues relevant to their chosen field
• Critically explores concepts, theories and empirical research methodology
• May entail primary research based on appropriate quantitative and / or qualitative research
- Identify an appropriate research question relevant to their chosen field of study
- Critically review and apply research methods (if appropriate)
- Critically analyse and evaluate the issues involved relevant to the style and type of dissertation chosen
- Demonstrate an ability to :
• Relate theory and practical concerns
• Interpret data and argument in order to draw their own conclusions
• Communicate and develop logical arguments in written form
- Formally present their findings in writing to an appropriate academics standard
- Seek and make use of feedback from their supervisor
- Develop independent judgement and critical self-awareness
The substantive content of each dissertation will differ and will be a matter for the students and their supervisors to decide upon in consultation with the supervisor.
The research each dissertation will involve many common elements, and is strongly linked to the Research Methods Module at level 2, in particular the following :
- Developing aims and objectives to be the basis of a coherent and a realistic research proposal
- Reviewing previous academicals literature and relating to theorical / conceptual debates and issues
- Learning and critically applying an appropriate research methods
- Writing up in a clear and analytical way
- Presenting finished product in a professional and appropriate academic manner
- Total Learner Hours: 400
- Contact Hours: 30 consisting of series of supporting one hour workshop held throughout the dissertation process which will focus on issues such writing proposals, setting aim(s) and objectives, critically exploring and writing a literature review, quantitative and qualitative methods, analysing primary data, abstract writing and coordination the dissertation
