The long and winding road starts with induction in Savignac. We are introduced to professional, motivated and intelligent students who are usually sat at the edge of their seats in the amphitheatre- Catherine Quervelle (programme leader at the Ecole de Savignac) and Roger Haigh (former co-Director at the Ecole de Savignac) have prepared them well! The students are introduced to the team (past and present), Tim- the manager, Hilary- the experienced, Jenny- the efficient, Marloes- the big sister, Christelle- the researcher, Beverley-the mum and Tonia- the Welsh.
The impressions are good and the adventure starts. We explain that coming to England is not just about education and nor is it just about employment- what the students actually gain is one of the best experiences of their lives! While they are in England we are their teacher, confidant, parent, leader, motivator and sometimes their councillor. We explain that we are the ‘sat nav’- we know the final destination and we know the quickest and easiest route to get to the end, however some students like to take a detour on their way! And we are quick to lead them back to the right road.
Over the years we have had tears, tantrums, managers, supervisors, entrepreneurs, logical thinkers, students with their own ‘time’, academics, professionals, students with differing opinions of the word ‘deadline’, some amazing hand bags, intelligence, motivation, and most importantly enthusiastic students. The students learn the essentials from us like theory, Harvard referencing, report structure but they also learn so much more! They learn ‘life’ skills: - managing money, time, people, deadlines, assessments, employment and how to stay awake during a Tuesday morning lecture at 9am! We have learnt so much from you all- patience is definitely a word we have added to our vocabularies.
A huge and enormous congratulations to a very special promotion- not only because they were our last but because they were our 1st ever to be inducted as a group of 25, to arrive in England as a 25 and finally to graduate as our 25 - Promotion 11: you have done us proud.
A final thought- according to Ellis (2016) ‘Some teachers taught the curriculum today- other teachers taught students and there is a big difference.’
